The Human Anatomy, Animated With 3-D Technology - NYTimes.com
NYU Medical students wear 3-D glasses and dissect a virtual cadaver projected on a screen. The professor says "it's like a living digital textbook." I do, however, really hope my doctors have experience with the human body and don't do like a kid who has practiced basketball and never played in the game - bumble the ball as they start. No one wants to be a practice dummy - in this case a practice cadaver.
Yet, do you realize that we could now add human dissection to anatomy class? In 3D you could dissect the human body? There are very exciting things coming in this area. -

This is interesting. ETS has launched a website about:

I find it fascinating that a company would use a wiki because so many have resisted this. I wonder who can join and who can edit. Interesting.

Yesterday a competition to improve automatic scoring of essays kicked off and computer scientists are invited to join the competition to "best well known testing firms including AIR, CTMMcGraw-Hill, ETS,and Pearson." The Open competition runs through april.
This is an effort to grade essays without a human grader involved.Personally, to me, writing implies audience and to not have a human read the writing of these students is problematic to me. -

Publishers don't like the Federal government's open access policy that requires that research funded by government-sponsored grants be released to the general public a year after publication. I cannot believe how the publishers are continuing to try to shut down the flow of information. This is as infuriating as SOPA.

5 Stories to Inspire Teachers to Never Let Anyone Steal Your Joy

Dry Erase Markers.
Yesterday, all the dry erase markers in my whole room were gone. Not a big deal, you say. If you knew that I always keep about 12 and 4 in reserve and that all, even the reserves were gone.
Two Staplers.
How about that last week, both of my staplers with my name labeled on them were taken.
Favorite Pens.
Or the week before that - that all of my favorite ink pens went missing including those I buy with my own money because they are too expensive for the school to buy.
Pencils.
Or the week before that - it was all my pencils.
My Most Useful "Gadget": My LiveScribe SmartPen.
But to top it off, I have to admit something. Something I'm ashamed to tell you because a dear friend gave this as a gift to me. Someone who reads this blog. He gave me something I loved and treasured very much and as soon as I get back through this year, I will buy again. My liveScribe pen was taken and my students and I have isolated it down to a 5 minute period when it went missing.

It is shameful to admit this because we'd all like to pretend that we captivate the hearts of all of our students and they sing our praises all day long. But that would be a lie. Every great teacher has some kids who just don't like them. And I've got one for sure this year. I have my suspicions.
I am somewhat ashamed but know that a child like that wants attention and the gratification to see me upset. I also know that the harm of a false accusation on my part would be more shameful than just moving on.
I got upset about my Livescribe and so they thought it was funny and gave me more of that. I'm ignoring it. The kids who love me will tell me eventually, they always do.

But until this comes to light, as such things inevitably do, I have to hold onto the stories from this week.
- Hold onto the senior who gave ME a gift on his last day of school yesterday for "what I've meant to him."
- Or the parent who called my house to say how she cried when she saw her 14 year old daughter's website.
- Or the parent who called my Daddy and told him how much I have meant to his daughter and family and how I changed her life.
- Or the three seniors who proudly brought me a "Cool Cat" mug that they had found for me.
- Or the senior who put "Thank you Mrs. Vicki for all you've done. This senior movie would not be possible without you" in the credits of the slideshow."
"If I was a better teacher ___ wouldn't have happened."
If you're such a great teacher why would someone be so hateful?
Because no one is perfect. No one is liked by everybody and people (especially kids) can be mean. Sometimes those with the greatest anger most need your life and they fight you just before you break through!
Everyone sings the praises of teachers but don't know that most of us have that one student or two who hurt us and cause us pain.
Great Teachers Overcome Great Obstacles
The greatest teachers often have the greatest obstacles to overcome! The greatest shames.
When you watch movies like Freedom Writers or Mr. Holland's Opus you see the climax in your mind with everyone applauding. You don't really see the pain. You don't remember the heartache of the characters as they experience their own humiliation and failure. They are there. Watch the movies again.

I want you to read these stories and picture the kids in your classroom writing about you in 20 years. What would they say?
Look at the things that make great teachers. Keep your eye on the stories. Making a difference to just one child at a time. Knowing that the upset-ness you feel over that one situation went awry is lying to you. YOU CAN BE A GREAT TEACHER.
And you also don't remember that often the praise of the teacher is sung when their career is OVER. When they are DONE. You're not done. You're here and now.
So, hold onto these stories and BE the story. BE the living inspiration. And know that these stories were written by ONE person each. Don't let the ONE or TWO who enjoy making a sport of your consternation cause you to be less of a teacher to the other 95% of the students in your class. That isn't noble and it is beneath you.
And remember that if you are a parent as our first author says, that perhaps the greatest need for teaching applies to you.

Predictions of the Future from Doug Casey
One of my sister's passed an article on to me where Doug Casey, a highly respected author, publisher and professional investor, predicts three possible futures. These futures are of what the world will look like 20 years from today (2031). Casey bases his projections on facts, research, and sound analysis, and while all three are possible and I encourage you to read the entire article, the second one to me is the most plausible and likely and so it is only that one which I will excerpt below:
MIDDLE CASE – FACTS ARE IGNOREDAgain, I highly encourage you to read the entire article, which lays out the methodology and background and reasoning behind the predictions and also lays out the other possible futures.
The world’s governments continue under the delusion that printing massive quantities of paper money will solve problems when, in fact, printing lies at the base of the problems. Most currencies lose most of their value. Some lose it all. This destroys the most productive people in society, the middle class, who produce more than they consume and save the difference... in currency.
And it injures successful corporations that have billions, or even tens of billions, in cash. Few of their managers know what to do with such sums other than to hold currency; at best they’ll buy their own and other companies' stock. The result is a stock market boom in the midst of a grim depression. But only one person in a hundred will be in a position to benefit from it, because most will be living too close to the edge, and the stock market will be the last thing on their minds. The destruction of capital sets technology back quite a bit in the U.S., Japan and Europe. Chindia increases its relative strength.
The U.S. government, believing it has both the obligation and the ability to “do something,” redoubles its control of the economy. Price controls and capital controls are the order of the day. Petroleum products are rationed. Enforcement of new regulations is assigned to a new agency, the “Economic Recovery Administration,” which resembles the TSA in most regards – except it has many plain-clothes employees, to better ferret out violators.
People think increasingly of politics as the way to get what they want. More and more Americans move abroad – although things are deteriorating in most places in the world. Poor, backwater countries offer the best opportunities because their governments are either weak, or corrupt, enough to allow new economic activity.
