Vodun practitioners worship a pantheon of gods and lesser deities that inhabit objects ranging from stones to waterfalls. They believe that the spirits of their ancestors dwell among them, and they employ talismans, or “fetishes” like dried animal parts, for spiritual and physical rejuvenation as well as for protection against spells cast by malevolent sorcerers. “Le vodun is Africa. It is the faith of our ancestors,” I was told by Dagbo Hounon Houna II, the spiritual chief of vodun in Benin, where 20 percent of the population, or a million people, practice pure vodun and another 40 percent embrace a form that incorporates Christian iconography.

Economic arguments are useful, but so are human arguments, which seem alarmingly lost on the Nigerian government. Prices have gone up but salaries remain the same. A driver in Lagos who earns 25,000 naira, about $152 a month, would have had to spend almost three-quarters of his salary on transportation to and from work, and this is before he would have to pay for food and, if he has children, for school fees. In Nigeria we like to say that we can “manage,” but it is almost impossible to see how many people could manage that.

We are an oil-producing nation and it is not unreasonable for Nigerians to expect affordable petrol, nor is it unreasonable for Nigerians to expect more from a democratic government. A friend of mine, after calculating how much she would now spend getting to work in Lagos, said, with her eyes alive with rage, “Our senators make $100,000 a month if you count their salaries and allowances. A month! In dollars! They live in government houses and have government cars. And none of them pay for their own petrol.”

Important types such as the harmful effect of focusing on outcomes instead of process (the system), the lack of tools for teachers, and the harmful effect of shifting blame versus finding solutions.   • A good teacher’s lessons last a lifetime - NY Daily News

    The measure of a good teacher. This is talking about an increase in test scores or decrease when you arrive or leave. What if you're there for a long time - it is hard to measure the delta then. The findings from the New York Daily News.

    "Instead, they discovered that some teachers are demonstrably better than others — and that those teachers have long-lasting effects on their pupils.

    The data showed that when an excellent teacher joined a school, scores in that teacher’s grade immediately rose. When such a teacher left, scores plummeted.

    The benefit of having such a teacher, as measured on exams, lasted for three to four years in school. Later on, the students

    were more likely to attend college, earned more money, lived in better neighborhoods and were less likely to become teenage parents than those with poor instructors.

    Chetty, Friedman and Rockoff predicted that children who have just one quality teacher between grades 4 and 8 will see their lifetime earnings increase by $4,600.

    The researchers also estimated that replacing a poor instructor with just an average one — not even a good one — means children in that class will collectively earn an additional $267,000 over their lifetimes. Leaving a poor instructor in a school for 10 years, Friedman told The New York Times, means as much as $2.5 million in lost income to students.

    “The message is to fire people sooner rather than later,” he said."

    Australia is now in a long line of countries who feel their education system is poor. Here is a "shocking" study in the Sydney paper:

    "THE standard of teaching in Australian preschools is ''very poor'', a government-funded national study into the quality of early education has found.

    The finding from the E4Kids study suggests children may be attending little more than glorified playgroup, despite research indicating that early learning makes a crucial difference to their long-term development."

    This article in the Tampa Tribute points out just how large and yet, how unknown the Florida Virtual School is. 

    "In less than 15 years, Florida Virtual School has become the largest state-funded online K-12 school in the nation, an enterprise with a $166.3 million budget and close to 1,500 employees and 130,000 students. It offers more than 110 courses, from core subjects like algebra to electives such as Chinese and guitar."

  • The Human Anatomy, Animated With 3-D Technology - NYTimes.com

    NYU Medical students wear 3-D glasses and dissect a virtual cadaver projected on a screen. The professor says "it's like a living digital textbook." I do, however, really hope my doctors have experience with the human body and don't do like a kid who has practiced basketball and never played in the game - bumble the ball as they start. No one wants to be a practice dummy - in this case a practice cadaver.

    Yet, do you realize that we could now add human dissection to anatomy class? In 3D you could dissect the human body? There are very exciting things coming in this area.

    This is interesting. ETS has launched a website about:

    "Educational Testing Service (ETS), the world's leading measurement and research organization, has launched a new website to stimulate discussion, debate, and promote empirical research to help teachers and students meet the goals of the English language arts (ELA) Common Core State Standards." but this is most definitely a wiki (looks like wikispaces.) I find it fascinating that a company would use a wiki because so many have resisted this. I wonder who can join and who can edit. Interesting.

    It says you can join. It will be interesting to see what they are doing with this. Perhaps some of you common core experts should join.

    Yesterday a competition to improve automatic scoring of essays kicked off and computer scientists are invited to join the competition to "best well known testing firms including AIR, CTMMcGraw-Hill, ETS,and Pearson." The Open competition runs through april.

    This is an effort to grade essays without a human grader involved.Personally, to me, writing implies audience and to not have a human read the writing of these students is problematic to me.

    Publishers don't like the Federal government's open access policy that requires that research funded by government-sponsored grants be released to the general public a year after publication.     Darren Draper has a concise, well written explanation of the 4 reasons schools should move to 1:1 with research cited. I think the part I like best isthat we are no longer saying 1:1 laptop but, instead 1:1 technology. I am forwarding this one to my technology committee.

I didn't really intend for it to center on the testing piece but I guess that is what the editors thought hadn't already been covered, although I do agree with everything I said on it. Of course, many will say we need much more than testing but I think the big point is that pencil and paper don't cut it. We are wasting time with how we test now and can be much more targeted in terms of what students know and how we can teach. Your thoughts?

    The biggest thing that bothers me about all these apps is that we have no learning analytics - no feedback loop at all to parents or teachers. I literally have to watch my son play his ipad learning games to really understand where he is and what I need to do to fill things in.

    Principals and administrators should print out this infographic and discuss it around tables. This is a link to an infographic about happiness at work. Interestingly, the 3rd happiest job in the US is a "teacher" (although I bet this has changed.) Also, those who have security in their jobs tend to be happier. Also, if you have highly engaged and satisfied employees you have a better organization. Is that a surprise?

    The New York Times oped that opposed SOPA and said it would take censorship in America to a new high. Maybe we'll be the ones buying VPN's like my friends in China do. the biggest point of this article is:

  • Free music downloads on rise at Cleveland Public Library service: Whatever happened to... | cleveland.com

    The Cleveland public library has added MyTunes Freegal, a service that lets patrons download 3 free music downloads a day.  Now, their patrons are downloading over 5,900 songs per month. This is seen as a service that is bringing back patrons to the local library.

    As libraries go digital, this is just one way that it is going to happen.

    Guidance counselors are really doing administrative work that principals have shifted to them instead of the work of advising students according to this article and the cited research from education trust. Perhaps helping students should begin in the counselor's office.

    "The Education Trust found that more than 90 percent of counselors say advocating for students is the "ideal mission for their profession," but only 45 percent say that's what they do at work. Things are even worse at low-income schools, where students may need a counselor's advice and guidance even more than their wealthier peers....art of the problem is that counselors "are saddled with menial tasks that are unrelated to preparing students for success after graduation,” researchers found.

African Abortion Wars

Every sub-Saharan African state already allows pregnant women to abort when their lives are in danger, and in recent years Benin, Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Swaziland and Togo have been working at expanding their laws to allow abortions in more circumstances.

Still, in all of sub-Saharan Africa, abortion is legal only in Cape Verde and South Africa. And the number of unsafe abortions on the continent is staggeringly high: every year, there are over six million unsafe abortions conducted in Africa, and about 30,000 women die from the procedure. Unsafe abortions are among the leading causes of death for women admitted to hospitals around much of the continent.

Examining Other Genocides

The NYTimes reports on the Shoah Foundation and a broadening of its role:
...in a dramatic expansion of its mission, the foundation is now incorporating testimonies from mass atrocities other than the Holocaust into its archives. Five survivors of the Rwandan genocide are learning the organization’s archiving methods at the Shoah Foundation Institute here, part of an effort to add at least 1,000 interviews with Rwandans to the foundation’s archives. Ten testimonies from Rwanda have been recorded already, with at least 50 more expected next year
