Last born in a family of three children and leading a successful single life, Gondwe believes that the social pressure on girls to be raised for marriage and child bearing has been a major cause of many young girls’ academic failure.“The general feeling in many African societies is that girls have to be raised to be married and have children. However, the world is changing and we need to move away from this perception that sees women as baby-making machines,” she said.Continuing she indicated that:

We don't know why so many intelligent, smart young ladies steer away from technology and science-related fields.
We don't know why one of the highest growth industries in the world that allows the excellent to telecommute from home and gives some of the greatest flexibility in work hours doesn't attract more young women.
But, lets start with something we do know. We do know that teacher, Pat Yongpradit, winner of Microsoft Innovative Educators Forum last October in Cape Town, South Africa, is attracting young girls into his Computer Science program through an after school video game programming club.
Meet Pat, a young teacher introducing young girls into the exciting field of Computer Science.
I spent some time interviewing Pat last October in Cape Town and want to share his interview here.

(A Clawson mother) refuses to allow her 13-year-old daughter to read an assigned book she considers pornographic. She is even considering pulling the girl out of Clawson Middle School if she cannot reach an agreement with the district.
Her daughter was assigned to read "My Sister's Keeper" by New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult, in an eighth-grade girls literature class.
It is a novel, available in the adult fiction section of libraries, about a young girl who sues her parents for the right to make her own decisions about how her body is used when a kidney transplant is planned to potentially save her older sister. The book includes some descriptions of sexual activity.
this is the first time in the past two years that a book has been challenged. She said the student was given an alternative book and allowed to read in a quiet place where she would not hear discussions about "My Sister's Keeper."
