Michigan Primary Election Recap

On Tuesday, Michigan voters went to the polls, and largely continued their recent streak of picking the worst possible candidates for office. Democrats picked an angry corrupt communist, and Republicans picked a naive vague lying empty suit. Or as theblogprof described it "Michigan gubernatorial election to be between a douche (R) and a turd sandwich (D). Or how Democrats shot themselves in foot by picking Bernero, while the GOP shot themselves in the foot by picking Snyder."

Once again, I'm getting a lot of questions on what I think about the results.  First off, I disagree with some on the right (RightMichigan.com) who are advocating that conservatives and Republicans sit this one out or vote third party or independent. One lesson that we should have learned from Obama is that we can do worse- and no matter how much I think that Synder was the wrong choice for the residents of Michigan to make, they still have the potential to make a worse choice by putting a guy like Bernero in office. That means that conservatives and Republicans can't 'sit this one out' or 'vote third party or independent'- they'll need to hold their nose and pull the lever for Snyder, if only to deny Bernero.

As Governor, Synder will be a step up from Michigan's current Governor, Granholm. He is inexperienced and outside of politics, so once he gets in office, he, like Obama, will be forced to hire a lot of experienced people from government to fill out the ranks. He's just one guy, and probably has a 'brain trust' of 'outsiders', but reality is reality, and he'll need to fill out his second and third and fourth levels of government, and will need to do that by putting in place solid Republicans and conservative people, so on the balance, that will make the Executive Office, which is larger than one man, a much better office than it is today. His instincts will be better than Granholm's, if only because her every action is wrong and he is bound to get more right than that.

Picture it like this- Democrat Governor Granholm has made things worse in Michigan, and Synder won't do that- he'll keep things basically the same or possibly even marginally improve things. By comparison, a guy like Hoekstra or even more so Cox would have markedly improved things and been a real game-changer, but Michigan voters didn't go that route.

On the other hand, Michigan voters still could decide to make things worse, because although they had a chance to put a Democrat like Dillon in office who would also have kept status quo, they went with Bernero, who incredibly enough will be a whole lot worse than Granholm. You see, Granholm is a liberal, but is a foolish liberal who thinks she is doing good things and who tries stuff but it is always wrong, and because of that, has made things worse in Michigan. Bernero is a committed liberal who is bought off and will owe his office to selling his soul to the unions, and once in office will make a solid and concentrated effort to do the wrong things.

Bernero will raise taxes, redistribute wealth to the poor, work to strengthen labor unions in Michigan, increase taxes on businesses, transfer that wealth to government employees, increase environmental standards to absurd levels to pacify the watermellons but leave plenty of loopholes for politically connected groups, drive entrepreneurs and creative competitive businesses out of Michigan, and increase the amount of money going to corrupt government offices like the Michigan Film Office and the MEDC.  He'll be worse than Granholm, and will make Michigan worse than it is today.

So there is a real choice here- marginal improvement or markedly worse. That is not what I suggested- my suggestion was great improvement or marginal improvement- and it is probably not the choice that other conservatives wanted, but it is an important choice. So get ready to ignore the poopy diaper and just pull the lever for Synder.
