Ernest Hemingway: The Snows of Kilimanjaro (Audio CD)

The Snows of Kilimanjaro Product Description

"It came with a rush; not as a rush of water nor of wind; but of a sudden evil-smelling emptiness. . ."

A flamboyant, hard-drinking, ruthless, and womanizing world adventurer comes face-to-face with the one antagonist he cannot conquer: his own ignoble and imminent death. . . .

Written in 1938, The Snows of Kilimanjaro is a classic distillation of the themes Ernest Hemingway obsessively explored throughout his writing career. When Harry, the central character, goes on safari to "work the fat off his mind," his ambitions are cut short when a terrible accident leaves him facing his ultimate death and weighing the meaning of his life. Hemingway's brilliant prose is given a penetrating and moving reading by Charlton Heston in an audio that only deepens in meaning with each listening.

I love this audio book. Charlton Heston is amazing. I could literally listen to this over and over and not get tired of it.

I decided to listen to The Snows of Kilimanjaro because another Hemingway story, The Old Man and the Sea, is one of my favorite books of all time. This book is a very, very close second. I wouldn't say that its for everyone, but this is a must have for any fan of Ernest Hemingway.

From AudioFile

A compilation of Buddhist writings is presented in an accessible format. Each section of text is introduced with a short statement by narrator Sean Barrett, followed by the text itself, presented by Kulananda or Anton Lesser--or in the case of dialogues with the Buddha, both of these two narrators. Each narrator reads with reference and respect. The recording is broken into separate tracks on the CD for each introduction and each section of text. A booklet enclosed with the recording provides a key to the tracks. This post-production care enhances the use of the collection as an introduction to Buddhist teachings and/or a meditation tool. Well produced audio book. 3 CD's, about 4 hours long. A narrator first explains the source of several teachings, from the Pali Canon, to follow. Then, actors read Buddha's text to simulate how the Buddha and his followers may have sounded, as Shakyamuni (the Buddha) taught his lessons.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a book by Mark Twain, first published in England in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885. Considered as the Great American Novel, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written in the vernacular, characterized by local color regionalism. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective).

The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River. Satirizing a Southern antebellum society that had ceased to exist about twenty years before the work was published, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an often scathing look at entrenched attitudes, particularly racism.

The work has been popular with readers since its publication and is taken as a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It has also been the continued object of study by serious literary critics. It was criticized upon release because of its coarse language and became even more controversial in the 20th century because of its perceived use of racial stereotypes and because of its frequent use of the racial slur "nigger".
