Juan Williams: Government is One Big Charity?

Juan Williams was on Sean Hannity today discussing President Obama's economic and domestic policies, and when push came to shove and facts and figures and data and evidence was cited, he fell back on the same argument that liberals and progressives always fall back on when the results of their policies prove to be harmful to poor people, minorities, and the groups in society that need the most help- he fell back on the argument that for all of the government's faults, at least it was taking wealth from rich people and redistributing it as charity to poor people.

Liberals and progressives, who have seized the old Democratic Party and are now running it as a communist organization, believe that one of the primary roles of the new United States of America is to use the power of the state to distribute charity to those who need it. But their actions and beliefs are in fact resulting in less money and wealth going to the people who need it in society because the government is THE SINGLE WORST charitable organization in the world, having considerable overhead, being motivated by politics and not need, and full of corruption and graft.

CATO, in a report that, although dated, still gets to the heart of the matter, said:

Private charities have been more successful than government welfare for several reasons. First, private charities are able to individualize their approach to the circumstances of poor people in ways that governments can never do. Government regulations must be designed to treat all similarly situated recipients alike. Glenn C. Loury of Boston University explains the difference between welfare and private charities on that point. "Because citizens have due process rights which cannot be fully abrogated . . . public judgments must be made in a manner that can be defended after the fact, sometimes even in court." The result is that most government programs rely on the simple provision of cash or other goods and services without any attempt to differentiate between the needs of recipients.

Take, for example, the case of a poor person who has a job offer. But she can't get to the job because her car battery is dead. A government welfare program can do nothing but tell her to wait two weeks until her welfare check arrives. Of course, by that time the job will be gone. A private charity can simply go out and buy a car battery (or even jump-start the dead battery).

The sheer size of government programs works against individualization. As one welfare case worker lamented, "With 125 cases it's hard to remember that they're all human beings. Sometimes they're just a number." Bureaucracy is a major factor in government welfare programs. For example, a report on welfare in Illinois found procedures requiring "nine forms to process an address change, at least six forms to add or delete a member of a household, and a minimum of six forms to report a change in earnings or employment." All that for just one program.

In her excellent book Tyranny of Kindness, Theresa Funiciello, a former welfare mother, describes the dehumanizing world of the government welfare system--a system in which regulations and bureaucracy rule all else. It is a system in which illiterate homeless people with mental illnesses are handed 17-page forms to fill out, women nine months pregnant are told to verify their pregnancies, a woman who was raped is told she is ineligible for benefits because she can't list the baby's father on the required form. It is a world totally unable to adjust to the slightest deviation from the bureaucratic norm.

In addition to being better able to target individual needs, private charities are much better able to target assistance to those who really need help. Because eligibility requirements for government welfare programs are arbitrary and cannot be changed to fit individual circumstances, many people in genuine need do not receive assistance, while benefits often go to people who do not really need them. More than 40 percent of all families living below the poverty level receive no government assistance. Yet more than half of the families receiving means-tested benefits are not poor. Thus, a student may receive food stamps, while a homeless man with no mailing address goes without. Private charities are not bound by such bureaucratic restrictions.

Private charity also has a better record of actually delivering aid to recipients. Surprisingly little of the money being spent on federal and state social welfare programs actually reaches recipients. In 1965, 70 cents of every dollar spent by the government to fight poverty went directly to poor people. Today, 70 cents of every dollar goes, not to poor people, but to government bureaucrats and others who serve the poor. Few private charities have the bureaucratic overhead and inefficiency of government programs.
Democratic policies are increasingly being defended on 'charitable' grounds, from healthcare policies to economic policies to environmental policies, but the truth of the matter is that government is a poor method of distributing charity. Instead of relying on government and its horrible charitable giving, all of these programs should be ended and the money spent on them should be returned to citizens. Even if a small percentage of this money was given in charity, then it would be more successful than government programs, and as long as there are a lot of conservative Republicans around, we can be sure that a good percentage of money will be donated and not a small percentage (according to studies, liberals don't donate to charity- they feel superior by taking money from you and giving that to charity).

‘Charity Doesn’t Solve Anything’-Carlos Slim

Mexican businessman Carlos Slim Helú.Image via WikipediaIn the WSJ, Carlos Slim on charity:

“The only way to fight poverty is with employment,” he said. “Trillions of dollars have been given to charity in the last 50 years, and they don’t solve anything."...Now Mr. Slim isn’t un-charitable. He has contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to his foundation and has funded millions of dollars in joint-venture projects with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. So he clearly isn’t against charity entirely. His point seems to be that society would benefit more if the wealthy channeled their creative energies and talents toward building job-creating businesses rather than doling out cash. It is the 21st century billionaire version of the old adage, “give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime.”

President Cleveland's Advise

President Grover Cleveland was a Democrat, and yet even he knew that though the people support the Government, the Government should not support chosen people. Recently I was reading the message that he sent to Congress after he vetoed a relief bill, and I was struck by his deep understanding of government and its proper role in our country.

The proper or correct role of government, he knew, was not to support chosen groups or individuals- federal aid to support chosen individuals or groups encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the Government- it changes the relationship that you have with the state from one where you are in charge of the state to one where the state is in charge of you. Further, having the government step in and provide goods and services to those people or groups it chooses to support weakens the overall sturdiness of our national character- rather than people striving to improve and be better, they sit and wait for the government to rescue them. Lastly, having the government step in and provide benefits, money, and support for chosen groups dissuades those kind and good people among us who would give charity and help out, weakening further the bonds of common brotherhood in our nation.

President Cleveland was a wise man- he knew that if the government stepped into to help out anyone who needed charity, society would be less off and not better off than it is. Providing healthcare to the poor, extending unemployment benefits, paying for college, running readings programs for Spanish-speaking citizens, and providing jobs to people is not the proper role of government. I understand the desire that people have to want to help- but using the power of the state in the end creates a worse society. And it isn't just that people are taxed so much that they can no longer give to charity- it is that they are told by the government that the government is taking care of it, so they no longer should help out and be kind to their fellow man.

No one, not even the most rabid conservatives, are doubting that times are tough right now. No one is arguing that things are good. This isn't about conservatives being greedy, or racist, or evil- it is about the proper role of government in society, and creating a happier, more prosperous, more free society.

Our Founding Fathers knew this, and President Cleveland knew this as well- that the Constitution was put together with much thought and care by decent men and that it is not the power and duty of the Government to be extend to relief to individuals who are suffering. This is something that is properly related to the public service or benefit. We should steadily resist as a nation any tendency to disregard the limited mission of this power and duty. And it is important that we teach people why we are resisting this tendency- not out of any bad will, but out of understanding, trust, faith, and kindness.

I believe in America still. The friendliness and charity of our countrymen can always be relied upon to relieve their fellow-citizens in misfortune. This has been repeatedly demonstrated in our times- after hurricanes or terrorist attacks, the American people have stepped up and done more and better than our government could to help people. We need to once again unleash the American people and let them achieve their full measure- and resist the tendency to have government step in and do this instead of them.

100 Years of Trying- Communism Wins in the End Though

President Barack Obama's remarked today after the passage through the House of his new health control law that "after nearly 100 years of talk and frustration, after decades of trying, and a year of sustained effort and debate, the United States Congress finally declared that America's workers..." have health care reform.

Obama is right- the battle between communism and liberty has been raging for over a hundred years, and last week, communism won a great battle. The headlines are shouting how after years and years of fighting, finally healthcare reform is here. The way they say it makes you think that the reform is the good guy and the bad guys were the people fighting it- but in reality, the good guys were fighting the reform, and in yet another case of bizzaro world striking, the newspapers are cheering on the bad guy, health care reform.

That is not to say that health care reform is a bad thing- don't get me wrong, I think it is nice that millions of people are now going to get healthcare, that people with pre-existing conditions get covered, etc. It's just sad that to do that, the government is going to hold a gun to my head and make me work harder and longer so that others can benefit from the fruits of my labor. In a way it's like forced charity, but not really, because it is a very inefficient charity and it is a charity that makes me not want to give and the recipient not feel thankful for the gift that is being given to him. This healthcare reform, like much of communism, degrades the human condition, by forcing one person to give to another what they did not earn, demeaning the transactions that make our society civilized and humane.

People are claiming this health care reform is historic- it isn't really. Most communist nations long ago jammed through healthcare, overcoming opposition by those who fought for rule of law, liberty, freedom, and private property protection. Stalin greatly expanded health care for poor people in the Soviet Union in the 1930's, and so whatever victory Obama achieved he did so much later than other great communist leaders of the past. I guess what the newspapers are cheering is that Obama is right- after 100 years of determined efforts to keep the government out of private transactions between a medical professional and a person, the government finally managed to do what Mao, Stalin, and Hitler did long ago and inject itself between those groups and gain power and control over the transaction.

The sadness and anger I have is that after 100 years of talk, debate, and deliberation, our nation went stupid for two elections (2006 and 2008) and that was all that Democrats needed to end talk, debate, and deliberation and ram through the society-changing initiatives to move our nation away from a Republic of laws to a Dictatorship of men. Obama is right to gloat- he did what other dictatorships only dream about, and took a society of liberty, life, and property and reformed into into one of tyranny, death, and poverty.

The ‘Make Africa Wealthy’ campaign

CherryFlava proposes a 'Make Africa Wealthy Campaign' they ask

"How long has the world been feeling sorry for Africa?"
This continent's primary aim must be wealth. Its amazing how all the other problems would disappear if we created enough of our own.
Forget poverty, AIDS, TB, malaria and corruption and lets focus on making Africa stinking rich.
Keep you charity money, we don't need a handout. But we do need your time and creative business ideas.
You want to help Africa - get personally involved.
Advise on our business plans, open your markets, make it easier for us to contribute. Don't give us money because you feel sorry for us. Help us find things that we can sell to you and so make loads of our own money.
Handouts and charity are keeping the problems alive. Why would we stop begging if you keep on giving?

Lets keep our eye on the prize which is really going to make a lasting difference. Make Africa Wealthy - promote education, investment, cheap access to telecommunications and turn your charity money into African venture capital.

If you really do care - you'll stop thinking of Africa as a poor continent and rather as a rising competitor.

Fight poverty with wealth creation, not charity-John Kufuor

In CNN:
According to Kufuor, encouraging the private sector has been key to fighting poverty in Ghana. "We fight poverty with wealth creation, otherwise it's charity, and that's not what we came into government for," he said.

Aid and Sustainable Growth

Dambisa Moyo in the WSJ:

Few will deny that there is a clear moral imperative for humanitarian and charity-based aid to step in when necessary, such as during the 2004 tsunami in Asia. Nevertheless, it's worth reminding ourselves what emergency and charity-based aid can and cannot do. Aid-supported scholarships have certainly helped send African girls to school (never mind that they won't be able to find a job in their own countries once they have graduated). This kind of aid can provide band-aid solutions to alleviate immediate suffering, but by its very nature cannot be the platform for long-term sustainable growth...[continue reading]

Since Obama Won, Every Month More and More People Need Foodstamps to Survive Change

From Reuters, via Sweetness & Light, Food-stamp tally nears 40 million, sets record:

Nearly 40 million Americans received food stamps — the latest in an ever-higher string of record enrollment that dates from December 2008 and the U.S. recession, according to a government update. Food stamps are the primary federal anti-hunger program, helping poor people buy food. Enrollment is highest during times of economic distress. The jobless rate was 9.9 percent, the government said on Friday.

The Agriculture Department said 39.68 million people, or 1 in 8 Americans, were enrolled for food stamps during February, an increase of 260,000 from January. USDA updated its figures on Wednesday.

Enrollment has set a record each month since reaching 31.78 million in December 2008. USDA estimates enrollment will average 40.5 million people this fiscal year, which ends Sept 30, at a cost of up to $59 billion. For fiscal 2011, average enrollment is forecast for 43.3 million people.

In November of 2008 we voted for change... and the change was increasing numbers of people who have been forced to humiliate themselves and accept the forced charity of other taxpayers just to eat. Read that article again- every single month that Democrat President Obama is in office more and more people need foodstamps- the records started when he was elected, and every month that he is in office, more and more and more and more people are forced to go into a government office and admit that on their own they just can't make it and that they want to take charity from others who are forced to provide it.

The word to describe this is disgusting. Wrong. Unjust. Immoral. Sad. Obama. Democrat.

Evidence of Democratic Success! Record Number Enroll in Government Anti-poverty Programs!

One measure of success for Democrats is the number of people that they have helped save from starvation and poverty. It is a worthy measure of whether a policy is successful or not, and Obama, Peters, and all the other Democrats often campaign about how hard they have worked to expand the 'safety net' and 'feed the starving masses.' In their speeches they talk about how they are setting a goal for themselves of getting as many people who need help into the right government programs. And on their watch, under the Democratic Congress and a Democratic President, they have been successful in destroying an economy and driving record numbers of people to accept the forced charity of the governments dependence programs.

Democrats have been successful in ruining the private economy, of killing jobs with high taxes and regulation, of drying up private charities through taxes and regulations, of bankrupting businesses with regulations and taxes, and of setting up legal and regulatory barriers so that that private individuals are increasingly unable to help others. Barack Obama has done his job- under his watch and guidance, more and more people are forced to swallow their pride and accept the forced charity that is government welfare. Gary Peters has done his job well- money has been taken from businesses and individuals who worked hard for it, some of those businesses and individuals are unable to pay that money and go out of business or into bankruptcy, the money that is collected is cycled through several government agents who are well paid and have great benefits and retirement funds, some of that money is transferred to people and businesses who have friends in government and use those political connections to take some of that money, and then what little of that money is left given those people who need it. Success! And under Obama and the Democrats, that number has gotten bigger and bigger!

More than 50 million Americans are on Medicaid, the federal-state program aimed principally at the poor, a survey of state data by USA TODAY shows. That's up at least 17% since December 2007, the month that Democrats enlarged their majorities in the House and Senate and captured the Presidency. One out of every six people in the United States have been driven to beg for aid from the government, creating a mass of dependent wards of the state who are stuck on the dole but reliably deliver votes to those people who promise more benefits with less obligations and time limits. The remaining five out of every six people in the US are forced to work increasingly harder to provide for themselves and for the other who are not working.

Even worse is that last year Obama and Democrats in Congress like Gary Peters passed Obamacare, which is scheduled to add a minimum of 16 million new people to Medicaid, starting in 2014. This massive expansion in taxpayer funded welfare is sure to drive increasing numbers into bankruptcy and job losses, driving the numbers on welfare up even higher, all thanks to the success of Democrats policies.

More than 40 million people get food stamps, an increase of nearly 50% since the election of Obama in December of 2007, according to government data through May. The program has grown steadily for three years, ever since the Democrats captured Congress in 2006, as Democrats policies have increasing taken their toll on Americans and driven more to beg government agents for food.

Close to 10 million receive unemployment insurance, nearly four times the number from 2007. Benefits have been extended by Congress eight times beyond the basic 26-week program, enabling the long-term unemployed to get up to 99 weeks of benefits.

One last success for Obama and the Democrats- more than 4.4 million people are on welfare, an 18% increase during the recession.

The US is Bankrupt

"The dirty little secret is: the world has no money and the emperor has no clothes."

The United States is Insolvent. The United States is bankrupt. We are witnessing before our very eyes the death spiral of the modern day nation state. And an entire party in America, the engine that drives the world, keeps on insisting that we raise taxes, regulate businesses, spend more taxpayer money, and spend even more taxpayer money that it doesn't even have.

The phrase "The Emperor has no clothes" comes from "The Emperor's New Clothes", a short tale by Hans Christian Andersen. In it, an Emperor who cares for nothing but his wardrobe hires two weavers who promise him the finest suit of clothes from a fabric invisible to anyone who is unfit for his position or "just hopelessly stupid". The Emperor cannot see the cloth himself, but pretends that he can for fear of appearing unfit for his position or stupid; his ministers do the same. When the swindlers report that the suit is finished, they dress him in mime and the Emperor then marches in procession before his subjects. A child in the crowd calls out that the Emperor is wearing nothing at all and the cry is taken up by others. The Emperor cringes, suspecting the assertion is true, but holds himself up proudly and continues the procession.

In America, we have people (almost all Democrats, some moderate Republicans, and all the idiots who vote for them) who care for nothing but a larger and larger government. They have listened to fools like Keynes and Marx and Stalin and Mao who pushed largely discredited theories and adopted the policies that these people suggested. And things got worse. But they are unable to pull back- they are already intellectually committed to the charade, to the idea that massive government run everything will solve all the problems of the world, and as things get worse (the unemployment rate went UP last month again), all they can do is keep pretending. Everyone is invested in the great lie, the great charade, the great myth, and the as the deficits go up and the debt piles up, everyone simply pretends that it is invisible. But, it is a lie. Debt and deficits matter. Government borrowing and spending crowds out private spending and borrowing. Government charity crowds out private charity. And government is inefficient and uses force to do what it does.

The Democrats may keep shrilly shouting, and keep proudly marching, but they know- they know in their boots that that the United States has been driven to bankruptcy by their ideas, by their policies, by them. They are unable to go back, and are unable to reform- reform or pulling back will be like looking down and seeing how naked they really are. No, the only open is to march faster ahead, and pretend like debt and deficits don't matter, that they aren't bankrupting our nation and our children's nation and our grandchildren's nation, that they aren't destroying the moral fabric of our society, that they aren't making the quality of life less, that they aren't making people feel less and less satisfied about the direction of our nation. There is no going back now, and they know it.

Do you?

The 'Mzungu' thing

Alex Halperin in Nplusone:

The safer parts of Africa have become a workshop for high-concept philanthropy, wrapping adventurism in a veneer of charity. Young Americans bring yarn to a small Ugandan town, where they teach women to crochet hats to sell back in the States. Two British girls on a gap-year teach kids photography in Nairobi slums. They plan on selling the kids' work from a London gallery and, if the plan works out, somehow reinvesting the profit in the kids.

Images of Africa

From Africa Rising:

When a Western charity makes an appeal for funds with the photo of a seemingly helpless African child, the Western donor is cast in the role of the strong, generous, and righteous person helping the lowly and needy. Strength, generosity, and righteousness are all good things, but I fear that an unrighteous pattern has developed. The West and Africa have become type-cast into strong and weak, resourceful and helpless, giver and receiver, parent and child.
To cast whole continents and cultures in such starkly contrasting and fixed roles is an untruth and an injustice. There is strength in Africa, and there is resourcefulness, generosity, and righteousness...[continue reading]

Welcome South Sudan to the Family of Nations!

Today (July 9) a new nation was created, the nation of South Sudan. South Sudan became an independent state on 9 July 2011 at midnight (00:00) local time following a referendum held in January 2011 in which nearly 99% of voters opted for separation from the rest of Sudan. It has been an Autonomous Region of Sudan or at war with Sudan on and off since 1972, and now is finally its own nation. Sudan has recognized it, and so has the United States, it has ratified a Constitution, and now it is busy forming up its government.

Although I have few readers from Africa, perhaps I might have a couple from South Sudan, and so in that spirit I would like to pass on some advice on how to form a successful state.

People are very powerful, and by giving them as much freedom and liberty they will demonstrate their power by creating a prosperous economy, a strong military, and a vibrant civil society. The biggest obstacle to people is an active and large government that takes away responsibility and freedom from the individual, acts as a barrier to innovation and risk-taking, and sucks all of the money out of the system for projects that elites (government agents) deem important. It is my suggestion that any government created by South Sudan have a healthy respect to the dignity of human life, truly believe in the power of liberty and freedom, and work to put in place strong rule of law that protects above all the fruits of ones labor (private property).

A new nation must put in place barriers to itself, checking itself by separating power between different branches of government and then creating checks between branches to limit the abilities of each to overreach and act in a tyrannical manner. It also helps if the nation limits itself further by separating power between a national government designed to address national issues and local governments designed to address local issues, much like our fading federal system here in America.

Although I no very little about this nation so far, it appears that the current President Salva Kiir Mayardit has a chance to be a good one- a former general who was unambiguous about being free, if he can limit himself and set important precedents in his office than he will be a great one. Most nations that achieve independence get stuck with the first President for a long time as that person eventually becomes a dictator- Kiir needs to recognize that what made George Washington great was that he served his nation for two terms and then left office, turning over power peacefully. It is bothersome that he is so closely associated with the military, and that the legislative assembly is so weak and completely controlled by his party, but I have hopes for him, especially if he is a regular reader of my blog.

It is also not a good sign that the nation is so dependent on oil, especially when these oil resources are largely being developed by foreign companies, especially the Chinese government. One hopes that the government will use the ample oil revenues it receives to fund a limited government that will engage in national defense (not war), control its border, and distribute funds to local governments to put in place police and fire services, build libraries, and support transportation and education services. With the amount of revenue that oil provides, there would be little need to borrow abroad or tax its citizens or companies within, and this low tax and low regulation environment would be an engine of economic development that will eventually lead to a more diverse and prosperous economy. Note I did not suggest that the government use its oil revenue to provide a social safety net or redistribute wealth to poor people- a free and prosperous people will do that better than any sort of forced charity that the government could ever do.

Good luck South Sudan- I hope you take my advice and create a government for the people, by the people, that serves the people, in the spirit of life, liberty, and protection of property.

See the memeorandum story for more details on this new nation.

UPDATE: I really didn't want to make this a political issue, but I did see something interesting over at Ace of Spades...

Christian groups had been championing the southern Sudanese since the 19th century. And their efforts paid off in 2000 when George W. Bush was elected president of the United States. He elevated Sudan to the top of his foreign policy agenda, and in 2005, the American government pushed the southern rebels and the central government — both war weary and locked in a military stalemate — to sign a comprehensive peace agreement that guaranteed the southerners the right to secede. On Saturday, one man held up a sign that said "Thank You George Bush."

Teacher's Notebook

Although I had heard of Teacher's Notebook before, I had only visited it once or twice, and I certainly did not think of listing my products there.

This past weekend, however, I was looking through the posts in the Secret Facebook Training Room for Teaching Blog Traffic School members, and I saw a post from our fearless leader, Charity Preston, who mentioned a giveaway that the owners of Teacher's Notebook (Steve and Debbie) were running in the newest issue of the TN newsletter. The giveaway was for 25 free Teacher's Notebook shops (they are normally a one-time set-up fee of $20, I think) and would go to the first 25 teachers who e-mailed Teacher's Notebook to request one.

I saw this post almost a day after it had been written, so I thought there was no way Steve and Debbie hadn't already found their 25 winners, but I decided to give it a try.

Incredibly, I received an e-mail about 10 minutes after I'd sent it, telling me I'd won one of the 25 free shops! YIPPEE for me! (I never win anything, so I was unusually excited about this, I admit.)

It took me awhile to set up my shop (and I still have quite a ways to go because I'm a perfectionist and I have a lot of products to post), but it was so very easy! A great perk to Teacher's Notebook is that it is the only online venue I know of that allows teachers to keep 100% of their profits! I think that is super-cool and generous of Steve and Debbie, and I know I will be jumping over the moon when I finally make my first sale there.

If you'd like to check out my store, click on the picture below:

If you explore Teacher's Notebook and like what you see, please consider joining! I know that we teachers don't create original products in order to make money; we create original products in order to give our students the best learning experience in our classroom that we possibly can. Teachers around the world are scrambling to make their own products, too. I see posting your materials as a win-win situation: other teachers can use your hard work to help them NOT have to re-invent the wheel in their own classroom, and you can make an extra buck (or not, if you decide to post only free products). If I'm going to pay for educational materials, I personally prefer to purchase them from a fellow teacher. I like the confidence that comes from purchasing a product that I know another teacher has used successfully in his/her classroom. I also like contributing to other educator's wallets when I can. I know none of us went into the profession because of the money, but it is nice to be recognized and compensated for your hard work!

If you decide to join Teacher's Notebook as a seller, please consider using my referral link. I get reward points (toward gift cards that I can use to purchase classroom materials!) for every person who uses my referral link and posts at least 5 products. :) Click the picture below to join via my referral link:

I'm going to use some of my own fancy technology to ask a couple questions at the end of this post (QuizSnack!), but I'd love to know your thoughts on Teacher's Notebook (or similar teacher-resource websites) and/or the link to your store!

If Only They Controlled Everything

Listening to the Ed Schultz show on 1310 AM, the message was very clear- liberals want to control every aspect of everything. Caller after caller chimed in, all with the same message- that their biggest hope was to win every single election race in the whole country. If you asked these callers, or the thug Ed who hosts the show, if they could eliminate all the conservatives in the United States, I wonder sometimes what their reply would be. The host and the callers talked over and over about how they wanted to win all the political power in the US.

Just for kicks, I tried two other radio stations- Micheal Medved on 1400 and Sean Hannity on 760. Medved was talking about moral charity, God, and how to be a better person. Hannity was talking about human rights in Africa.

One party desires power over your life. The other party wants to make the world a better place. I don't care what you are really- liberal, conservative, right, left, green, libertarian- if it is a choice between power for powers sake or to make the world a better place, make the right call.
