Need to pick which student will go first for a presentation? Need to pick a student to answer a question? Need to pick a student for...anything? And need to do so randomly? There are a couple ways you can do that in a legitimately random way. No one can complain that the following methods aren't fair!
If you like to deal with numbers, or your students all have individual numbers assigned to them in class already, you could use Random.org. You can even put their free widget on your personal website so you can use random.org on the fly. Pretty nifty!
The next tool was made specifically for teachers, since the headline of it is, "Teachmeet victim selector!" (I laughed a little at the headline.) Anyway, you can type in a list of your students' names, and then press, "Go!" It will randomly select a student's name for your choosing. You can even save your list of student names and link back to them easily, so you don't have to worry about typing them in several times. I like this one because you could display it on the projector in the room, and then all students could watch it select a name. There would never be any question as to if their teacher is being "fair" or not, because they're seeing the names appear on the screen. Plus, it might be fun for the students to see the names rolling on the screen...kind-of like a school version of Russian Roulette! :) Also, notice that you can set timers for the student who is selected. I'm already imagining the possibilities....
