Re-racialising South Africa's politics

David Africa writing in Al Jazeera:
The ANC's knee-jerk response to any criticism, blaming white interests or parties, and an automatic defence of ministers, party leaders or judicial candidates because they are black, intensifies this polarisation. Of course there are lots of white racists in South Africa, and race clearly remains a fundamental factor in the distribution of resources and opportunity in the country. This does not mean that all criticism of the ANC is based on race, or that our defence against such racism must mimic the very racial categories we are trying to defeat. Certainly, black South Africans also deserve competent ministers, judges and civil servants. Even in the Western Cape province, where the ANC lost power to the opposition Democratic Alliance, the organisation is attempting to regain power by adopting the principles of ethnically-based mobilisation by focusing its efforts on the coloured community, which constitutes a majority of the population in this province. Non-racism has been overtaken by political expediency and the rush for power.

A non-racial South Africa cannot be built without a non-racial ANC, and the recent history of the organisation indicates that this dream is in danger of being washed away by a combination of populist Africanist rhetoric, ill-considered defence of whomever is black in government or the civil service - simply because they are black, and the adoption of racial mobilisation tactics. It remains to be seen whether an ANC that has lost its political moorings and its firm foundations of non-racism - and instead has become a battleground for factional and material interests - can reposition itself at the vanguard of the struggle for a non-racial society.

Concerned about spinning scandals, grabbing perks and racial issues

The title of this post is from an article in the Detroit News today about former Mayor of Detroit, Democrat Kwame Kilpatrick. Here is some more from that article:

According to text messages released Monday... sent on city-owned pagers, provide a window into how Kilpatrick ran his administration, revealing that he and his appointees and relatives were concerned about spinning scandals, grabbing perks and racial issues.

"There was a culture of corruption that started at the top and permeated down throughout the administration, through every department," Brown said. "There was a sense of entitlement like nothing I've ever seen."

The article goes on to talk about Kwame's perks of the jobs, including new cars, and about how Kwame viewed government, strong executive-weak legislative, about how he used race often, and how he tried to spin every bad event to gain more power for himself. There is another good article in the Detroit News today commenting about these events by Laura Berman:

But these newly released text messages also are a course in American civics, a study of a political leader captured in all his human complexity and moral vapidity. In 682 pages, SkyTel's court-released window into the promise, and failure, of Kwame Kilpatrick's administration is a primer on the normally hidden workings of power. It might as well be titled, "By Any Means Necessary."

Take a jaunt through the detritus of a disgraced mayoral administration, and you see a charismatic, intelligent, passionate, funny, life-embracing leader who swallowed his mother's Kool-Aid by the gallon.

"Leadership is a B," Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick texts, in May 2003. "But the rewards make the challenge worth our commitment to our God and our people. YOU ARE CHOSEN."

Process isn't on the table: The question, sometimes spoken, is how can Kilpatrick and his top aide, Christine Beatty, fire the cop, transfer the aide, kill the newspaper story -- do what they want to do.

That sense of calling isn't weighted, in any visible way, by any real values. He's a pleaser -- a man who gives people what they want, gives them the Kilpatrick they want. If he soul-searches, questions his own morality, wonders about right and wrong, none of it shows up.

If he ever entertains moral doubts, or feels shame, or questions any of the political decisions he and his staff makes, there is little evidence of it on the SkyTel pager record. Is he all energy, charisma, and drive, an attention-deficit-disordered mayor on a mission from God?

These articles are about the liberal African-American Democrat Kwame Kilpatrick, but I have a feeling they could describe another politician we have out there, one who also is "concerned about spinning scandals, grabbing perks, and racial issues.' This is about how the person goes about their business, how they operate- and it is not just Kwame who 'gives people what they want' and operates using the motto 'By Any Means Necessary.' There is another major politician in our country who feels that he is on a mission from God, that he is the chosen one, that he is the change and hope that we need.

These articles about liberal Democrat Kwame Kilpatrick remind me of liberal Democrat Barack Obama. I wonder what sort of 'a study of a political leader' we would get if we took a look at Obama's Blackberry- would it be of a leader of deep moral convictions, concern that his own actions might be causing harm, discussing history, civics, and economics, or would it too capture a politician 'in all his human complexity and moral vapidity' operating under the motto “Never let a serious crisis go to waste …"

Charges of Racism Flow Chart

Charges of racism are not a joking matter and are the kind of vile charge that should only be leveled on someone if you can clearly make a case that the reason why someone opposes something or supports something is because of the race of the person. If you were for something for many years, and then an African-American stood up and said it and you suddenly were against it, that's most likely be racism. If you were against something for many years, and then an African-American stood up and said it and you were still against it, that would not be racism. Racism is best seen in the contradictory and inconsistent policies of the Jim Crow era.

And yet, in spite of electing a President who has promised to raise our nation above the race debate, in spite of electing a President who many said would end racism, accusations of racism are skyrocketing and our nation is being divided even more bitterly along racial lines. It is almost as if the election of Obama represents the opposite of what he promised- the candidate who was elected promising less racial tensions has led to more. This should not be shocking- it is the same candidate who promised to be bipartisan and is the most partisan and who promised to bring change but who proposes ideas long since discarded and who has promised not to raise taxes but has raised taxes and who promised to not make raise above the rancor of Washington but makes the most personal attacks.

Racism is not a joking manner, but the way that the liberals in Congress are treating it, it is getting sadly and bitterly funny. As MISSOURAH.com put it "It’s pretty exhausting trying to keep track of what is legitimate criticism of President Obama and what is racial hatred. That’s why (he) developed this handy flow chart:"

Too Many Scandals to Count: TheBlogProf Covers Them All

Usually I don't post round-ups, but I'm falling behind trying to keep up with all these scandals that going down right now. Oh, I know it doesn't compare to the Bush era (although I can't remember exactly what the horrible scandals were during his time period, I know the media was hysterically yelling about it every day), there are a stunning amount of real scandals going down. I'm going to point you towards TheBlogProf's website for a review of all of these since it does a much better job than I am doing of keeping up with them all.

Typical: Obama's ambush on Pete Hoekstra in Michigan was coordinated with the media:
Obama ambushed Hoekstra with a classless joke- I covered it here- but it turns out that the White House had clued the media in on the ambush and everyone in the media knew that the White House was going to ambush Hoekstra and was just waiting to see his reaction when it did. Classless collusion.

Gallup: Congress Ranks Dead Last in Confidence in Institutions, Lowest Rating For Congress In Recorded History:
Latest Gallup poll shows a marked decrease in confidence in Congress ever since the Democrats took control of it in 2006- it looks like only 11% of people trust it to make decisions- and yet it is making more and more decisions of bigger and bigger impact. That's not right.

Breaking: Charles Rangel charged with ethics violations
Culture of corruption, thy name is and always has been Democrat.

When McCain picked Palin, liberal journalists colluded on best line of attack, called themselves Obama’s “non-official campaign”:
The growing JournoList scandal reveals that journalists colluded to attack Palin, the media then did attack Palin, and so the vast left-wing media conspiracy myth may in fact have truth to it.

Great News: Race was factor in which GM,Chrysler dealerships Obama forced to close:
The election of Obama did not lead to a post-racial era- it did the opposite in yet another example of Bizarro world's sense of humor. Turns out that that President was using racial criteria to determine which private businesses his goons would shut down. Tyranny?

Obama Wins Re-Election! The Future Foretold!

Not many know this about me, but I have the gift of Sight. What I usually do is surf around liberal blogs until I am sick and disoriented and my head is spinning, and then the vision comes to me- the vision of the future. My latest particular vision is quite clear- Democratic candidate Barack Hussein Obama, aka 'Waffles the Clown', is going to win re-election.

Via Victor Davis Hanson's post Reelecting Obama:

...We are beginning to see the contours of the upcoming 2012 reelection campaign of Barack Obama. Whether always officially sanctioned or not, Obama’s campaign will focus on three general themes: a) the 2008 meltdown of the economy on Bush’s watch; b) conservative heartlessness in gutting cherished entitlement programs; and c) racial bias behind any criticism of Barack Obama....

....However, Team Obama will make the argument that at least there has not been another Wall Street panic as during September 2008 under Bush, with the general uncertainty that followed. “Bush did it” is now too ironic a charge to evoke any more in matters of foreign policy, given that President Obama has now accepted all the Bush anti-terrorism protocols and wars — and gone well beyond them by joining a third conflict in Libya and quintupling the number of Predator-drone targeted assassinations.

But on the economic front, the “inherited mess” will have to do in the attempt to convince us that the present hard times are still George Bush’s while the signs of a weak recovery are all Barack Obama’s. Similarly, Herbert Hoover was still evoked for nearly a half-century any time FDR, Truman, or LBJ hit a rough patch....

...Greed, selfishness, and a lack of compassion — not an aging population, vastly expanded benefits, and soaring health-care costs — are responsible for the difficulties facing both Social Security and Medicare....

...If reelected, President Obama will probably be forced to do something about entitlements, but that certain something will for now remain unspoken, and he instead will attack any proposals to change Social Security with the same gusto with which he once trashed the Iraq War and Guantanamo. Already, supportive commercials are airing with a Paul Ryan look-alike shoving a grandmother out of her wheelchair over a cliff...

...Already, almost weekly one columnist or another insists that to criticize Barack Obama is to display racial bias....
With my gift of Sight, I can see this strategy working- shift blame, attack as mean anyone offering grown-up solutions, and toss the racism card early and often. Obama will win re-election in 2012 and then will no longer be restrained by the need to run for re-election and will fully embrace his fascist ideology and drive America further into a Great Depression that our nation will never recover from and be the same as it is today.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - illustrated edition and a link to download FREE audiobook

The Adventures of Huckleberry FinnCheck out ngims Publishing's other illustrated literary classics. The vast majority of our books have original illustrations, free audiobook download link at the end of the book, navigable Table of Contents, and are fully formatted. Browse our library collection by typing in ngims or ngims plus the title you're looking for, e.g. ngims Gulliver's Travels.

Free ebooks on the web are not organized for easy reading, littered with text errors and often have missing contents. You will not find another beautifully formatted classic literature ebook that is well-designed with amazing artworks and illustrations and a link to download free audiobook for a very low price like this one. The nominal price of this ebook covers the time and effort in formatting the materials and putting everything together in one place for your convenience. As a reader, you would want everything readily available at your fingertips because you many not have the time, interest or know where to look for your favorite book.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a book by Mark Twain, first published in England in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885. Considered as the Great American Novel, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written in the vernacular, characterized by local color regionalism. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective).

The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River. Satirizing a Southern antebellum society that had ceased to exist about twenty years before the work was published, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an often scathing look at entrenched attitudes, particularly racism.

The work has been popular with readers since its publication and is taken as a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It has also been the continued object of study by serious literary critics. It was criticized upon release because of its coarse language and became even more controversial in the 20th century because of its perceived use of racial stereotypes and because of its frequent use of the racial slur "nigger".

FEATURES:

• Includes beautiful illustrations from the original book
• A link of a FREE audio book to download at the end of the book
• Active Table of Contents for an easy navigation within the book
• Saves space and don’t have to carry a hard copy around

The Incoherence of Liberals

Earlier this week I wrote about the incoherence of liberals in my post Teaching and Brain-Dead Liberal Students. Today I direct you to Victor Davis Hanson's article The Imaginarium of Barack Obama, where he touches on the incoherence of the Grand Marshal of the Liberal Parade of Economic Doom, President Barack Obama:

The presidency of Barack Obama is full of funny things that need not follow any sort of logic. Images and ideas just pop in and out, without worry of inconsistency, contradiction, or hypocrisy. It’s a fascinating mish-mash of strange heroes and bogeymen, this imaginarium of our president.

In the imaginarium there are no revolving doors, earmarks, or lobbyists. So Peter Orszag did not go from being OMB director to a Citigroup fat-cat. Once chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel did not make $16 million for his well-known banking expertise. The more you damn the pernicious role of lobbyists and the polluting role of big money, the more you must hire and seek out both. Public financing of campaigns is wonderful for everyone else who lacks the integrity of Barack Obama who understandably must renounce such unfair impositions.

Those who now vote against raising the large Obama debt ceiling are political hucksters and opportunists; those who not long ago voted against raising the smaller Bush debt ceiling were principled statesmen. “Unpatriotic” presidents borrow $4 trillion in eight years; patriotic ones we’ve been waiting for can trump that in three.

Catching known terrorists and putting them in Guantanamo is very bad; killing suspected ones by drone assassinations — and anyone unlucky enough to be in their general vicinity — is exceptionally good. Tribunals, renditions, preventative detention, and all that were bad ideas under Bush-Cheney, but could become good ideas under Barack Obama, the law professor who often sees no need to follow the law when an immigration or marriage statute is deemed regressive.

A million Iranians protesting a soon-to-be-nuclear theocracy is false revolutionary consciousness and to be left alone; a few thousand Israelis wanting to buy apartments in the Jerusalem suburbs is subversive and worthy of presidential condemnation. And when atoning for supposed American lapses, what better place to begin apologizing than in Turkey, the incubator of the Armenian, Greek, and Kurdish mass killings? We need to deny history to make the case that America is not exceptional, and to invent it to persuade us that the Muslim world is extraordinary....

...There are lots of ways to bring Americans together across class and racial lines. One in the imaginarium is to focus on the “teabag, anti-government people.” Another is to encourage Hispanics to “punish our enemies” — or have the attorney general lambaste Americans as racial “cowards” and to defend “my people.” Joining foreign governments to sue a fellow American state is no more red/no more blue state unity. Still another is to divide up the people between the suspect who make over $200,000 and the noble who make less, or yet again target the dubious “1%” at “the very top” who do not pay “their fair share,” a mere 40% of the aggregate income tax.

Inside the imaginarium, the way to demonize the “1%” is to vacation among them — whether at Martha’s Vineyard or Costa del Sol. Buying a corporate jet is a waste of the people’s money — unlike daily flying on a much bigger private jet paid by the people....

...The president regrets that we are not innovative any more, and have gone “soft” and “lazy.” You see, his efforts at ensuring cradle-to-grave health care entitlements, of granting 99 weeks of unemployment insurance, and of extending food stamps to nearly 50 million are apparently incentives that should have led to a “hard” and “industrious” populace that was more self-reliant and willing to take risks on their own. “Spread the wealth” is a time-honored way of galvanizing people to become more self-disciplined and sufficient....

...In the imaginarium, community organizer Barack Obama never lived in a small mansion. John “two Americas” Edwards never lived in a big one. “Earth in the balance” Al Gore never lived in a few of them, and yacht owning John Kerry never lived in lots of them. You see in the imaginarium of Barack Obama you can be whatever you wish to be. Just wishing and saying something can wonderfully make it so.
FYI: Grand Marshal of the Liberal Parade of Economic Doom is going on the list of nicknames for Obama that I've been compiling.

Obama Officially Abolishes Transparency and Ethics

Oh, if only I was making up that title... via the Washington Examiner...

President Obama has abolished the position in his White House dedicated to transparency and shunted those duties into the portfolio of a partisan ex-lobbyist who is openly antagonistic to the notion of disclosure by government and politicians.

Obama transferred "ethics czar" Norm Eisen to the Czech Republic to serve as U.S. ambassador. Some of Eisen's duties will be handed to Domestic Policy Council member Steven Croley, but most of them, it appears, will shift over to the already-full docket of White House Counsel Bob Bauer. Bauer is renowned as a "lawyer's lawyer" and a legal expert. His resume, however, reads more "partisan advocate" than "good-government crusader."
After this, the article goes on to document all of the evidence that the guy Obama now has overseeing ethics and transparency in his administration in fact is against ethics and transparency- notably blog posts by Bauer that mock openness, brag about doing things in secret, advocate naked uses of power, and openly suggest avoiding laws.

So, this should officially dispel yet another myth of his campaign. Overcoming racial divisions was destroyed by his playing the race card and playing racial politics virtually all the time. Instilling hope was destroyed by his policies which contributed to preventing a recovery and extending a recession. Bringing change was proved to be scam when he pushed hard for policies that had been pushed hard for by Democrats for over 60 years- he even brags about how he has finally done things that FDR wanted done- that's not change. Bridging the partisan divide was proved to be a mockery when he pushed legislation through without any votes by the GOP and had conferences with them for the pure intent of lecturing them.

And now he has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that his administration does not even care about ethics and openness, and instead is all about passing bills in secret (healthcare bill, stimulus bill, etc were all passed mostly sight-unseen and unread and were advanced behind backroom dealing) and shrugging off ethics concerns (ie, not looking into the myriad of corruption charges related to selling offices, managing GM, etc). Obama has closed the door on Transparency and Ethics. Let's open the door to the White House and kick him out ASAP.

Black Listed

Sorry for the delay in posting- for the last several days I was working for the government on a test that they are producing, reviewing test items for content. I'm being vague on purpose- first, I don't want to violate any confidentiality about test items, and second, I don't want to get black-listed by the government and not get invited back.

The test is a state required one, and the state pays to have people write items for it, and then has a bias committee review the items for racial or sexist bias, and then another committee for content. The bias committee only looks at racial or sexist bias- not ideological or religious bias. But, there is plenty of bias of this sort on these tests.

I've worked on several tests for the state so far, and they are all pretty much the same- liberal. This is a Social Studies one. The test questions are on the following topics- labor unions, feminism, hippies, arguments against Vietnam War, Japanese internment in WWII, New Deal, Great Society programs, and the civil rights era. That's it. A teacher teaching social studies in this state only needs to have their students learn that information to do well on the test. Oh, and all with a heavy liberal slant to- there is no attempt made at balance. There are a lot of questions about the good things Democratic Presidents did, and a handful on the bad things Republican Presidents did. That's it.

Well, I'm not going to get into it further- I already am getting a lot of dirty looks for my comments on these committees, and have barely avoided getting purged several times. Just wanted to explain my delay in posting for the last couple days and give you a hint of the darker side of state created education tests.

Organized Religion-A Threat to our Freedom?

Patrick K. Johnsson writes in Afrik:
If only Africans would recognize organized religion’s incessant battle to crush their beliefs to the benefit of a religious culture that was carefully put together in Rome, the same culture that politically promoted sexual and racial intolerance while making Africans believe that the homosexuality was imported whilst Christianity is African. If only we had the slightest clue of the ongoing process of the redefinition of our hard earned civilization and freedom. Al-quaeda is not the only threat to our future freedom.

Tea Partiers- Homeland Security Views You As a Threat

Via theblogprof, there is this interesting article From World Net Daily today:

A newly unclassified Department of Homeland Security report warns against the possibility of violence by unnamed "right-wing extremists" concerned about illegal immigration, increasing federal power, restrictions on firearms, abortion and the loss of U.S. sovereignty and singles out returning war veterans as particular threats.

The report from DHS' Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines right-wing extremism in the U.S. as "divided into those groups, movements and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups) and those that are mainly anti-government, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."
Those of you attending the Tea Parties, here is what you stand for: America, federalism, 2nd amendment, pro-life, and the military. Here is who opposes your views: the US government, particularly bureaucrats.

This is getting weird- it is almost as if these tea parties were being held back in the pre-revolutionary days, when King George and his bureaucrats and their anti-freedom, anti-liberty, pro-bureaucracy policies were the norm. King George wanted you to stay home and sit out the pro-freedom events like this one- he didn't support federalism, gun ownership, and America. King George is the bad guy.

Today, it is King Obama- to be honest, it's not just Obama and it's not just the Democrats- it's also the big government Republicans and liberal RINO's who collaborate with those who would take our freedom. It is those out there who do not believe that I was given by God the right to own property (as much property as I want and it's a good thing!), that I was given by God the right to liberty, and that God gave me and others the right to live. Liberals and those who oppose these tea parties do not believe that governments were created by men to protect those rights, and that whenever they no longer protect those rights, they are no longer moral, they are no longer good, and they deserve to be changed.

Those of you who are going to Tea Parties this Wednesday- and here is the information you need for that- you are the good guys, you are the freedom fights, you are the right in this world. You are the ancestors of those who fought in our Revolution, you are the sons and daughters of the Revolution, and cheer with pride in knowing that by attending these Tea Parties, forget what the Department of Homeland Security says, you are doing the right thing.

UPDATE: Hot Air has a good story about the DHS report and other issues. Check it out, but don't be too worried- remember, aim to misbehave.

Obama creates disaster in the making

Thomas Sowell put out another brilliant article today, and the title of my post is the title of the headline. Democratic President of the United States Barack Obama is actively and personally trying to create a potential disaster for our nation, and Sowell writes about it in clear and powerful language. Here are some selected parts, although you should read the whole article here:

When that person is the president of the United States, the potential for disaster is virtually unlimited. Many people are rightly worried about what this administration's reckless spending will do to the economy in our time and to our children and grandchildren, to whom a staggering national debt will be passed on. But if the worst that Barack Obama does is ruin the economy, I will breathe a sigh of relief. He is heading this country toward disaster on many fronts...
Sowell goes on to talk about the country heading towards disaster by Obama and the Democrats putting in place and rhetoric encouraging and helping Iran to become nuclear, but he could have talked about Obama destroying our manufacturing capabilities with the energy limit-and-tax bill, or the Democrats policy of nationalizing key industries and then running them into the ground, or the Democrats and Obama taking over health care of you and you family so that they can encourage aborting your babies and killing off your grandparents. These are all disasters in the making, but Sowell goes another direction:
Nothing has torn more countries apart from inside like racial and ethnic polarization.
Sowell is right- identity politics is a corrupting influence on a country and will rip countries to pieces. Whether they be poor (Rwanda) or okay (Czechoslovakia), what tore apart these nations was identify politics. Making judgements and decisions based on race, color, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or religion- America was founded on not doing this, and we now have elected a President who is going to try hard to encourage these very things. Sowell ends his essay with these powerful lines:

This is a president on a mission to remake American society in every aspect, by whatever means are necessary and available. That requires taking all kinds of decisions out of the hands of ordinary Americans and transferring them to Washington elites-- and ultimately the number one elite, Barack Obama himself.

Like so many before him who have ruined countries around the world, Obama has a greatly inflated idea of his own capabilities and the capabilities of what can be accomplished by rhetoric or even by political power. Often this has been accompanied by an ignorance of history, including the history of how many people before him have tried similar things with disastrous results. Moreover, ignorance by itself is not nearly as bad as charging full steam ahead, pretending to know.

While the mainstream media in America will never call him on this, these repeated demonstrations of his amateurism and immaturity will not go unnoticed by this country's enemies around the world. And it is the American people who will pay the price.

America will pay the price for electing this Democrat.

Random Pieces of Unwisdom

Survey says- Raise taxes on wealthy! Yep, according to the Detroit News, the wise voters of Michigan, who have correctly decided to change the good times into bad ones by choosing Granholm and Obama, think that the best way to make the economy more prosperous is to hold a gun to rich people's head and demand money from them. After shaking down rich people for more change, voters will wonder why no one is investing any money or buying products, proving that sometimes, it is unwise to let liberals have political power.

Next piece of unwisdom- what do you do if you are a Democrat and restaurants and bars in Michigan are hurting, losing customers and going out of business? The same thing you do when car companies are in trouble- you hammer them even more with more regulations and fees! The Michigan House today voted to make it illegal to smoke in privately owned eating establishments, feeling that it is better to pay hundreds of government workers to walk around fining and arresting people for choosing to allow patrons in their business to choose whether or not to smoke than to have to smell smoke in a restaurant they choose to go to. Yep, that'll make things better- good call Democrats in Michigan House.

Not sure if you heard this next bit of news- it is being kept pretty quite and is getting lost in all the conversation about Sotomayor's judicial history and decisions- but Sotomayor would be Supreme Court's first Hispanic! I think she is a women too, although I haven't heard anything about that yet. For some reason I thought Alito was a Hispanic, but it turns out he was of Italian ancestry, which isn't even close. What ancestry was Roberts? Looking back, no one mentioned the racial/ethnic views of these candidates, and yet that is all liberals/Democrats talk about. Weird how obsessed they are about race- it is almost as if they judge people not based on the quality of their character, but by the color of their skin. Not wise.

Lastly, I have it from good authority (the Uncyclopedia) that Ted Kennedy once tried to invent the alcohol-fueled amphibious car with then-lover Mary Jo Kopechne, resulting in the drowning of Kopechne and the intoxication of Ted Kennedy. See the picture to the right? Not wise. He'll probably vote to confirm Sotomayor, supports outlawing smoking, and also supports raising taxes on the rich, thereby tying together this entire random post.

Libertarians Screwed Themselves By Not Voting or Voting Libertarian

Last election, libertarians screwed themselves badly by not voting or voting for libertarian candidates. Not for President, necessarily, although I would argue that a moderate Republican is better for the libertarian cause than a fascist. No, as evidence of how stupid it is to vote for libertarian candidates, I point to Republicans up and down the ballot that are libertarians running as Republicans, and were screwed over when libertarians didn't vote, supported Democrats, or supported Libertarians.

My most powerful piece of evidence of this is Cliff Taylor. The blog Western Right puts it this way:

One of the most painful losses for Michigan was the loss of Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Cliff Taylor to liberal Democrat Diane Hathaway. This is all the more so since it was unexpected. The vote was 49% to 39%, with 11% going to Libertarian nominee Robert Roddis. Now, goodness knows there are plenty of reasons for libertarians to not be happy with the Republican Party right now. But how does that carry over to Taylor? Taylor supported the rule of law, the free market, property rights, limiting lawsuit damages, gun rights, and opposed racial preferences. What's a libertarian not to like?

I agree- why did libertarians vote for Roddis, causing a liberal Democrat to win over a clearly libertarian Taylor? Why did libertarians not vote, causing an anti-libertarian to get on the bench? What logic is there to explain this?

When the seat of staunch conservative Robert Young comes up for election in 2010, you libertarians better wise up and vote for him.

A Personal Story: Teaching Global Studies Last Year:

Last summer I decided to earn an extra few bucks by teaching a summer school class called Global Studies. Global Studies class is supposed to be a survey of the countries of the world, and touch on their geography, history, economic systems, and current political issues. It's a good class, and gives kids a nice introduction to world history, US history, comparative government, and geography. In my mind, I saw this class as an opportunity to teach kids about the history and issues facing every country in the world- oh, I know it would just be an overview, but it would still give me a real chance to teach kids. I was very excited to teach it at first. Then I met with the teacher who taught in full time during the year who showed me the way the class was supposed to be taught.

The first unit that was to be taught in the class was Africa. I'd already done some background research for this class and put together a binder of stuff that I wanted to talk about with Africa- the geography of the area, an overview of the history of the continent, talk about the types of governments found on the continent, and finally expose students to some of the modern issues facing Africa. I told the other teacher all about my ideas, the projects I'd planned, the lectures I was going to give, the articles students could read, and all the fun stuff we'd learn.

The other teacher listened to me talk about my plans for the class with a bored look on her face. At the end of my excited talk about my lessons, she looked at me and said "that’s nice work, but this is how we teach this unit.” She was around 40, and had been teaching this particular class full-time for almost 20 years- about 200 kids a year went through her class, which means that she'd had time to touch over 4000 kids so far. The way that she taught this unit was to give the students a textbook that they were to use and a worksheet packet to work on. That's how she wanted me to teach the unit.

"Okay, we'll use the book and the worksheets, but I'd also like to talk about other things too," I said, disgusted, but needing the paycheck from this job.

"Good," she said, "I also spice things up in the class. Our department has approved the following additional materials to be used in addition to the textbook." She handed me packets about racial issues, articles about the bad effects of colonialism, biographies of 'great' African leaders like Mandala and Mogube, a lecture on shamanism, a project on apartheid, and pictures of rain forests. "This is it," she said, "at the end of this unit, make sure that students understand that Africa is poor, starving, illiterate, black, and hopeless due to the oppression of white colonial powers."

Stunned by the one-sided nature of this unit, I sat in silence. Mistaking my silence for approval, she continued "If you want to do something really fun, in years past we've set up a charity in school to divert money from rich spoiled white kids to the poor people of Africa."

I found my breath again, and somehow managed to keep my anger in check as I hissed "Isn't this all just rather empty jargon? Where is the educating about the real history of Africa? Why is no time set aside to study the true nature of political and economic systems in Africa? Isn't this class just one that perpetuates stereotypes and promotes a shallow understanding of the issues that Africa faces?"

The other teacher looked at me in surprise, and then she frowned, and said "Just stick to the curriculum and don’t change it.” With that, I was dismissed.

I took whatever this teacher gave me, threw it in the garbage, and taught the class the way I wanted it taught. My 20 kids learned the history, geography, economic and political systems, and current issues facing Africa, and then Asia, and then Europe, South America, and every part of the world.

The next year, I wasn't asked back.

Smart Aid for Africa

Mired in grinding poverty and social destitution, Africa cries for help. A cacophonous galaxy of rock stars, anti-poverty activists, and heads of state are calling on the G-8 countries to cancel Africa’s $350 billion crippling foreign debt and double aid to the continent. British Prime Minister Tony Blair will make aid to Africa the centerpiece in Britain's presidency of the G-8 meeting in Gleneagles, Scotland in July. Live 8 is planned for July 2. After meeting with President Bush on June 10, modalities are being worked out to cancel at least $34 billion in debt of 27 of the world’s poorest nations, mostly African. Will this African Marshall Aid Plan work?

Africa’s plight follows a ten-year attention deficit cycle. Every decade or so, mega-plans are drawn up and rock concerts held to whip up international rescue mission for Africa. Acrimonious wrangling over financing modalities ensues. Years slip by, then a decade later, another grand Africa initiative is unveiled. Back in 1985, there was Live Aid and a “Special Session on Africa” held by the United Nations to boost aid to Africa. Then in March 1996, the U.N. launched a $25 billion Special Initiative for Africa. In September 2005, the plight of Africa will again take center-stage at a U.N. conference with clockwork precision. Expect another major initiative for Africa in 2015.

Helping Africa of course is noble but has now become a theater of the absurd – the blind leading the clueless. A recent IMF study estimated that Africans in the diaspora remit $32 billion annually back to Africa, with the main destinations being Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya. About $7 billion is sent to southern Africa (Ghana News Agency, Accra, May 31, 2005). The amount Africans abroad remit back exceeds the $25 billion Tony Blair seeks to raise.

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo says corrupt African leaders have stolen at least $140 billion (£95 billion) from their people since independence. The World Bank estimates that 40 per cent of wealth created in Africa is invested outside the continent. Even the African Union, in a stunning report last August, claimed that Africa loses an estimated $148 billion annually to corruption – or 25 percent of the continent's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Rather than plug the huge hemorrhage, African leaders prefer to badger the West for more money. And the West, blinded by its own racial over-sensitivity and guilt over the iniquities of the slave trade and colonialism, obliges. This is the real tragedy of Africa.

Between 1960 and 1997, the West pumped more than $450 billion in foreign aid – the equivalent of four Marshall Aid Plans – into Africa with nothing to show for it. Contrary to popular misconception, foreign aid is not free but a soft loan. Outright debt relief and massive inflow of aid without any conditionalities, safeguards or monitoring mechanisms is absurd. It is akin to writing off the credit card debt of a drunken sailor and allowing him to keep the same credit cards. No African government has been called upon to give a full public accounting of who took what loan and for what purpose since many of Africa’s foreign loans taken in the past were misused and squandered. No government official has been held accountable; instead, irresponsible past borrowing behavior is being rewarded.

More distressing, much of the new aid money will flow directly into an African government budget – a huge black maze of vanishing tax receipts, extra-budgetary expenditure items, perks and off-budget “presidential privy accounts,” redolent with graft, patronage and waste. Over the past few decades, African budgets have careened out of control. State bureaucracies have swollen, packed with political supporters. Back in 1996, 20 percent of Ghana's public sector workforce was declared redundant by the Secretary of Finance and Guinea’s 50,000 civil servants were consuming 51 percent of the nation's wealth. In Kenya, civil service salaries take up half the budget; in Uganda, it is 40 percent. Zimbabwe has 54 ministers; Uganda with a population of 35 million has 70, while Ghana, with a population of 22 million, has 88 ministers and deputy ministers. With bloated bureaucracies, soaring expenditures and narrow tax bases, budget deficits have soared.

They are covered with World Bank loans and foreign aid (Ghana’s budget is 50 percent aid-financed and Uganda’s is 60 percent). If the aid is insufficient, the rest of the budget shortfall is financed by printing money. Even when is aid available for “budgetary support”, there is no guarantee that it will be used productively to generate a return to repay the soft loan. It could well be “consumed” when it pays for the salaries of civil servants. Writing off Uganda’s debt does not eliminate the aid dependency. In fact, when the World Bank canceled $650 million of Uganda’s debt in 1999, the first item President Yoweri Museveni purchased was a new presidential jet!

British Prime Minister thinks he can cajole or browbeat African leaders into curbing corruption and ensuring that resources released by debt relief are put to some good use – such as increased spending on education and health care. But the push for good governance and reform must come from within – from African civil society groups, organizations and the people. However, in country after country, chastened by diabolical restrictions, these groups have no freedom or political space to operate.

Carlos Cardoso, an investigative journalist, was murdered in November 2000 for uncovering a bank scandal in which about $14 million was looted from Mozambique's largest bank, BCM, on the eve of its privatization. The official in charge of banking supervision, Antonio Siba Siba, was also murdered while investigating the banking scandals. Such was also the fate of Norbert Zongo, a popular journalist in Burkina Faso, who was gunned down on Dec 13, 1998, while investigating official corruption. In September 2001, President Isaias Afwerki closed down all the independent media and arrested its staff, quashing calls for democratic reforms. In all, the government shut down eight private newspapers and arrested its journalists, picking them up in their newsrooms and homes and from the streets. They were held in a central jail until April, 2002, when they threatened to begin a hunger strike to protest their detention. They were then transferred to an undisclosed location.

In neighboring Ethiopia, President Meles Zenawi, a member of Tony Blair’s Africa Commission, just held fraudulent elections. Anticipating public outrage, he banned street demonstrations for one month and assumed full control of the country’s security forces. When the opposition rallied to protest the results dribbling in, the police opened fire, killing 26; opposition leaders have been placed under house arrest. Witness the election machinations in Egypt.

The paucity of good leadership has left a garish stain on the continent. Worse, the caliber of leadership has distressingly deteriorated over the decades to execrable depths. The likes of Charles Taylor of Liberia and Sani Abacha of Nigeria even make Mobutu Sese Seko of formerly Zaire look like a saint. In an unusual editorial, The Independent newspaper in Ghana wrote: "Most of the leaders in Africa are power-loving politicians, who in uniform or out of uniform, represent no good for the welfare of our people. These are harsh words to use on men and women who may mean well but lack the necessary vision and direction to uplift the status of their people (The Independent, Ghana, July 20, 2000; p.2).

The crisis in leadership remains a major obstacle to poverty reduction and has many manifestations. It is characterized, among others, by the following dispositions and failings: The "Big Man" syndrome, subordination of national interests to personal aggrandizement, super-inflated egos, misplaced priorities, poor judgment, reluctance to take responsibility for personal failures, and total lack of vision and understanding of even such basic and elementary concepts as "democracy," "fairness," "rule of law," "accountability," and "freedom" -- among other deficiencies. In some instances, the leadership is given to vituperative utterances, outright buffoonery, stubborn refusal to learn from past mistakes, and complete absence of cognitive pragmatism.

Believing that their countries belong to them and only them only, they cling to power at all costs. Their promises are worth less than Al Cappone’s. They stipulate constitutional term limits and then break them: Angola, Chad, Gabon, Guinea, and Uganda. African leaders themselves drew up a New Economic Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) in 2001, in which they inserted a Peer Review Mechanism (PRM), by which they were to evaluate the performance of fellow African leaders in terms of democratic governance. What happened? To be fair, they acted in reversing the “military coup” in Togo in February but went on vacation when elections were stolen in Zimbabwe and Togo.

Ask them to cut bloated state bureaucracies or government spending and they will set up a “Ministry of Less Government Spending.” Then there is the “Ministry of Good Governance” (Tanzania). They set up “Anti-Corruption Commissions” with no teeth and then sack the Commissioner if he gets too close to the fat cats (Kenya) or issue a Government White Paper to exonerate corrupt ministers (Ghana in 1996). To be sure, multi-party elections have been held in recent years in many African countries but the electoral process was so contumaciously manipulated to return incumbents to power. Four such “coconut elections” have so far been held this year: Zimbabwe, Togo, Congo (Brazzaville), and Ethiopia.

Ask them to place more reliance on the private sector and they will create a Ministry of Private Enterprise (Ghana). Ask them to privatize inefficient state-owned enterprises and they will sell them off at fire-sale prices to their cronies (Uganda). Or ask them to move a foot and they will demand foreign aid in order to do so. In 2003, some 30,000 ghost names were discovered on the payroll of the Ministry of Education, costing the government $1.2 million a month in salaries heisted by living workers. When Ghana demanded foreign aid to purge the payroll of these ghost names, Japan coughed up $5 million.

The reform process has stalled through vexatious chicanery, willful deception, and vaunted acrobatics. Only 16 out of the 54 African countries are democratic, fewer than 8 are “economic success stories,” only 8 have a free and independent media.

No amount of debt relief and increased aid will help Africa until Africa cleans up its own house. But the leadership is not interested in reform. Thus, without new leadership and genuine reform, debt relief and increased aid would compound Africa’s problems and more African countries will implode. The continent is stuck in a veritable conundrum. What can Western donors do?

Smart aid would do one of two things. One, bypass the vampire state and target the people, who produce Africa’s real wealth. An African economy consists of three sectors: the traditional, informal, and the modern sector. The people who produce Africa’s real wealth – cash crops, diamonds, gold and other minerals – live in the traditional and informal sectors. Meaningful development and poverty reduction cannot occur by ignoring these two sectors. But in the 1960s and 1970s, much Western development aid was channeled into the modern sector or the urban area, the abode of the parasitic elite minority. Industrialization was the rage and the two other sectors – especially agriculture – were neglected. Huge foreign loans were contracted to set up a dizzying array of state enterprises, which became towering edifices of gross inefficiency, waste and graft. Economic crises emerged in the 1980s and billions in foreign aid money were spent in an attempt to reform the dysfunctional modern sector. Between 1981 and 1994, for example, the World Bank spent more than $25 billion in Structural Adjustment loans to reform Africa’s dilapidated statist economic system. Only 6 out of the 29 “adjusting” African countries were adjudged to be “economic success stories” in 1994. Even then, the success list was phantasmagoric. Ghana, declared a “success story” in 1994, is now on HIPC life-support system.

At some point, even the most recklessly optimistic donor must come to terms with the law of diminishing returns: That pouring in more money to reform the modern sector is futile. Greater returns can be achieved elsewhere – by focusing on the traditional and informal sectors.

Second, smart aid would empower the African people (African civil society groups) to monitor how the aid money is being spent and to instigate reform from within. Empowerment requires arming the African people with information, the freedom and the institutional means to unchain themselves from the vicious grip of poverty and oppression.

Africa already has its own Charter of Human and Peoples’ Rights (the 1981 Banjul Charter), which recognizes the right to liberty and to the security of his person (Article 6); to receive information, to express and disseminate his opinions (Article 9); to free association (Article 10); to assemble freely with others (Article 11); and to participate freely in the government of his country, either directly or through freely chosen representatives in accordance with the provisions of the law (Article 13). Though the Charter enjoins African states to recognize these rights, few do so. When President Thabo Mbeki called on June 3, President Bush should have handed him a signed copy of this Charter to be delivered to President Robert Mugabe of ‘Zimbabwe.

The institutional tools Africans need are an independent central bank (to assure monetary stability and stanch capital flight), an independent judiciary (for the rule of law), a free and independent media (to ensure free flow of information), an independent Electoral Commission, an efficient and professional civil service, and a neutral and professional armed and security forces.

Recent events in Ukraine (November), Ghana (December), Zimbabwe (March), Lebanon (April), and Togo (April) unerringly underscore the critical importance of these institutions. Without them, President Bush’s plan to spread democracy may stall. Democracies are not built in a vacuum but in a “political space” in which the people can air their opinion, petition their government without being fired on by security forces and can choose who should rule them in elections that are rigged by electoral commissions packed with government goons.

On May 13, thousands of Egyptian judges, frustrated by government control over the judiciary, agitated for full independence from the executive in their oversight of the electoral process. “The institutions are presenting Mr. Mubarak with an unexpected challenge from within, one that will be difficult to dismiss. The fact is, major changes in this country are going to come out of those institutions, not from the streets," said Abdel Monem Said, director of the Ahram Center for Strategic Studies in Cairo.

In the past 24 years, Egypt has received more than $55 billion in U.S. aid in direct government-to-government transfers. Smart aid would assist civil society in instigating institutional reform. Since this approach carries some risks, the same objective can be achieved by funneling aid through diaspora Africans and their organizations, as was the case with Soviet dissidents during the Cold War.

Africa’s long term growth prospects do not lie in rock concerts and increased dependency on Western aid but on the ability of the African people or civil society groups to instigate reform from within. Assistance to such groups – both at home and abroad – constitutes much smarter aid to Africa than all the LIVE AID concerts Bob Geldof can organize.

Picture of the Obama's Campaign HQ: Blacks and Women Need Not Apply?

Lynn Sweet is a columnist and the Washington Bureau Chief for the Chicago Sun-Times, and over at her blog I saw a picture that she took of the Obama 2012 Headquarters in Chicago 'techies corner'. One thing that jumps out to me regarding this picture from the heart of a multiracial Chicago of the HQ for the campaign of a post-racial 'black' President is that out of the 25 people I can see, there are 3 people of color and 4 women. This is the exact sort of diversity that I expect out of a guy like Obama who has put in place policies that have struck the hardest at those groups in society who need the most help.

I'm no math major, but 3/25 is only 12% and 4/25 is only 16%- both of those rates of employment are considerably below what one can find in the population at large and I would imagine that if any private or public business had employment rates like that lawsuits would result.

Here is a picture of the whitest and most male group of staffers that President Obama can assemble:

AU: Pushing for Conservatives of Color

One of the biggest problems facing the Republican Party is the perception that it is not welcoming to minority groups. To many Republicans, this upsets us- after all, our party freed the slaves, our party fought against slavery, our party fought the racial segregation in the south, our party passed the Civil Rights bills over Democrat's objections, and our party today pushes an agenda that minority groups should support.

The Republican Party has pushed for educational reform and accountability- not to help out the rich kids in the white schools, but to help out those stuck in failing schools in predominantly urban areas. The Republican party has pushed for welfare reform- not to hurt minority groups but to help them to gain dignity and freedom by moving off of the welfare rolls of the state to making their own living in this world. The Republican Party pushes for more crime fighting and tougher punishments on criminals, ideas that should be winning in communities that sadly have higher rates of crime. The Republican Party is the party that fights the drug culture that is so corrupting to the inner cities and minority communities. The Republican Party fought against raising the minimum wage, which studies have shown cause higher unemployment in minority groups. On issue after issue, it is Republicans who are pushing policies and ideas that would benefit minority groups, and yet the perception remains that Republicans and their ideas are wrong.

This is partly the own fault of the Republican Party, and efforts need to be made to change this perception. Akindele Unleashed discussed this in a recent column-read the full column by linking here- here are some highlights:

However, it seems like the biggest challenge is how Republicans can approach urban areas. The answer is simple. Just talk about issues that are relevant. I think I brought this up several times in our discussion. Instead of template talking points and foreign platforms I stressed the need for discussions on mental health, family building, global education, and even participating in race relation discussions. The key here is relationship building.

We know the GOP has ties with various Chamber of Commerces across the State of Michigan but are we partnering with other community based groups who have direct access to people in our community? When was the last time the GOP connected with Focus Hope? The North Oakland Republican Club volunteered to work in a soup kitchen in Pontiac not too long ago. Most GOP clubs will not even conduct meetings in urban communities. That alone shows the disconnect.

Civic education forums are needed to inform constituents on the issues as well as creating solutions. I said nothing about bashing elected officials. I said solutions. If the GOP becomes more solution-oriented we will see a positive outcome in urban communities.
Akindele hit on a couple important ideas that Republicans should be well aware of- relationship, making the effort to reach out, and focusing on solutions. Every Republican can should heed this advice- they can not afford to not to if they want to help out minority groups in our nation.
