Michigan Government Encouraging People to Not Have Children

One of the greatest freedoms and liberties that you have is deciding whether or not to have a child. This decision of whether or not to create life should be free from government intervention, and advertisements that run encouraging women to have as many children as possible are just as inappropriate as advertisements encouraging women not to have children.

But yet, that is what the cash-starved Michigan government is doing. Through a program called Plan First, run by the Department of Community Health, the Michigan government is actively encouraging women to not have children.

Under the guise of family planning, the Department of Community Health has been running radio commercials that encourage women not to have children by making it appear that children are a financial burden on people, and that before having kids, women should think twice. This is not what I have a problem about- before having children people should think twice, and children are expensive- but it is the tone of the advertisements that I dislike- the ads portray children as a mistake that our society could do without. I requested recordings of the commercials but was not given them, so you'll just have to take my word for it- these commercials that my tax money is paying for portray children in a bad light and attempt to make people not have children ever, regardless if they are ready for them or can afford them.

Children are not mistakes like Democrat President Obama said, and neither are 40% of the children born in our state 'unintended pregnancies' as the Governor Granholm called them- children are unexpected blessings, and the state should not be portraying children in such a manner.

According to the State of Michigan, the target of these commercials is women in their 30's and 40's who make 50,000-60,000- a group of women who should know whether or not they want a child without my taxpayer money telling them not to have one, and also can afford to have one without the state preaching at them how much of a burden children are.

Family planning services are fine- but what Plan First is doing and encouraging in this budget age where every dollar matters is not a good use of taxpayer money.
