Revolution? On a Monday?

For years I have been kidding around with my students, teasing that one of these days, there is going to be another revolution in our country. For years I have joked about it- before this election cycle, it was a half-hearted jest mostly. But this election cycle is different.

And it's not different just because a Democrat is going to win. It isn't different because Barack Obama is going to win. What makes this election cycle so different is the way that it is being won- by buying the election, by committing voter fraud, by personally attacking average citizens, by never assuming any positions on anything, by fostering sexism and racism in our society, by preaching spread the wealth policies, and by running down traditional American values.

What does this mean to our system of government? It might represent the break-down of several aspects of our political system. The financing of elections is obviously breaking down. The registration process for voters is breaking down. Foundational principles on which America is based are breaking down- federalism is ignored, limited government is forgotten, checks and balances are over-ridden, and majority rule/minority rights has been perverted into minority rule/majority no rights. America is breaking down.

Yeah, this sounds depressing, but I was reading Cold Fury, and a lot of people agree with statements like the one he made on his website- "this is us vs them, and it’s going to mean blood, American blood, before it’s over. It sucks, I hate it, I wish it wasn’t so, but it may very well be so."

Yeah, I know, a Monday post should be more cheerful than this.
