Libertarians Screwed Themselves By Not Voting or Voting Libertarian

Last election, libertarians screwed themselves badly by not voting or voting for libertarian candidates. Not for President, necessarily, although I would argue that a moderate Republican is better for the libertarian cause than a fascist. No, as evidence of how stupid it is to vote for libertarian candidates, I point to Republicans up and down the ballot that are libertarians running as Republicans, and were screwed over when libertarians didn't vote, supported Democrats, or supported Libertarians.

My most powerful piece of evidence of this is Cliff Taylor. The blog Western Right puts it this way:

One of the most painful losses for Michigan was the loss of Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Cliff Taylor to liberal Democrat Diane Hathaway. This is all the more so since it was unexpected. The vote was 49% to 39%, with 11% going to Libertarian nominee Robert Roddis. Now, goodness knows there are plenty of reasons for libertarians to not be happy with the Republican Party right now. But how does that carry over to Taylor? Taylor supported the rule of law, the free market, property rights, limiting lawsuit damages, gun rights, and opposed racial preferences. What's a libertarian not to like?

I agree- why did libertarians vote for Roddis, causing a liberal Democrat to win over a clearly libertarian Taylor? Why did libertarians not vote, causing an anti-libertarian to get on the bench? What logic is there to explain this?

When the seat of staunch conservative Robert Young comes up for election in 2010, you libertarians better wise up and vote for him.
