Market Responses to Presidential Elections

For the record, using the beauty of interactive charts on yahoo finance, I did some calculations on what the Dow Jones Industrial Average does in the week after the election. Here are the next 5 days after the election and what happened:

2008, Election of Democrat Obama, 9139 to 8693, -446
2004, Re-Election of Republican Bush, 10054 to 10385, +331
2000, Election of Republican Bush, 10977 to 10517, -460
1996, Re-Election of Democrat Clinton, 6041 to 6266, +225
1992, Election of Democrat Clinton, 3262 to 3225, -37
1988, Election of Republican Bush, 2124 to 2065, -59
1984, Re-Election of Republican Reagan, 1229 to 1206, -23

Based on what I can gather, the market drop that took place this last week doesn't look out of the ordinary, and happened to both Republicans and Democrats. So, my earlier comment about the markets response to Obama may have been unfair.
